400bhp... Toyota Yaris?
Yes, you did read that correctly. Toyota have chosen a somewhat strange base vehicle to throw their hybrid technology at, but the results are quite impressive. It is powered by a 4 cylinder 1.6 litre engine, designated a 'Global Race Engine', which is then connected to, not one, but two electric motors with drive being transferred through all 4 wheels.
Most interesting though, is that the car features a KERS system, which recovers braking energy and stores it in a capacitor for extra power when needed. For many people this technology will be familiar from Formula 1 and Le Mans and it's application here shows that it's headed for mass production models across the board in the near future. Due to be displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the car gives the impression Toyota are lining themselves up for a heavier involvement in motorsport, maybe even a return to the World Rally Championship (although this is pure speculation on my part)!
